Youth Impacted Each Year
Homelessness casts an ever expanding shadow over our city. Last year alone, our streets and shelters claimed 25,000 homeless children. Sheltering Arms offers creative and versatile solutions to the City’s homelessness challenge, beginning with homes that provide both shelter and development opportunities for youth looking to break free from a cycle of homelessness and hunger.
Our transitional housing offers youth a place to call home for the first time in their lives. Youth living at ”Safe Home” and ”Safe Haven” have survived traumatic past experiences of homelessness — from living on the streets to starving from a lack of food. Most have fled their homes because of abuse, neglect, or severe poverty. At Safe Home and Safe Haven, youth experience a normal residential life where they can appreciate safety, comfort, and consistency like never before. By incorporating expertise from our diverse youth programs and wellness services, we heal past wounds and strengthen the mental and social well being of homeless youth.
During their time in our homes, youth also gain the support they need to succeed as independent adults. Residents work with counselors on securing employment, opening bank accounts, saving money for the future, and applying for housing. Youth who transition out of the program will frequently return to our homes – not because they’ve fallen into a cycle of homelessness, but because they’ve attained success and want to inspire others. These role models share their success stories and prove how successful young people can be when given the right support and opportunities.
