Sheltering Arms held its annual benefit event on April 29th and honored Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP for their philanthropic leadership and support of New York’s highest need communities. The event was co-chaired by Vanguard sponsors Morgan Stanley and Gail Coleman & Saul Kupferberg.
“The Next Chapter” highlighted Sheltering Arms’ significant growth in New York City and its new name, which was unveiled in February 2015. Formerly Episcopal Social Services, Sheltering Arms has become of the City’s most recognized providers of Early Childhood Education, mental health, and juvenile justice reform programs. The new name emphasizes Sheltering Arms’ legacy of serving high-need children and families through compassionate and innovative programming from the north Bronx to Far Rockaway. Throughout the event, attendees became a part of “The Next Chapter” by meeting with children served by Sheltering Arms and directly contributing through the “Sponsor a Future” initiative.
“Children are our greatest natural resources,” said Clyde Frazier. He added, “They deserve teams of teachers, supporters, and leaders to reach their goals, and Sheltering Arms has formed an amazing team.” Allen Parker, the Presiding Partner of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, emphasized his firm’s longstanding commitment to Sheltering Arms, saying, “We have placed at the disposal of Sheltering Arms the same resources and expertise that we deploy for our other clients. Through Sheltering Arms, we are helping to provide access to such basic goods as home life, education, and positive role models to those who would otherwise lack them.”
Proceeds from the event will be used to support Sheltering Arms’ efforts to deliver innovative programs that maximize the potential of children and families across New York City. In addition to Vanguard sponsors Morgan Stanley and Gail Coleman & Saul Kupferberg, the event was generously supported by Visionary sponsors Jennifer & Peter Wallace and Julie & Bob Daum.
“Our staff, board members, and donors have enabled us to dramatically grow in breadth and depth over the past four years,” said Elizabeth McCarthy, CEO. “Some of our kids are here tonight to share their amazing stories and show you the powerful impact of your support.”
