Video – Youth Poets Wear Masks to Reveal Their Deepest Struggles, Healing, and Identities

Youth explore the themes of identity, discrimination, violence, self-esteem, and healing in an art therapy ‘Mask Project’. They recorded and performed spoken word poetry to accompany masks they created which depict their inner identities worn on the outside, covering their identifying facial features. They created the masks and recorded their poetry in our ‘Safe Space’ Youth Centers, which provide education, development, and care to homeless or at-risk youth.

Youth speak about their struggles with abuse, gang violence, and discrimination because of their LGBT identities. Youth in our communities battle challenges like these every day, struggles which began before many of them can remember. They can and do overcome challenges through the support of our youth programs.
